Radio Frequency RF propagation survey identifies dead spots

Client: A major power coal producer site in Queensland.

Challenge: A Queensland open cut mine was experiencing ongoing underperformance of its wireless mesh network which was installed and commissioned by Acubis three years prior. The network provided reliable infield data communication for the onboard fleet management system allowing all mobile machines to record and share critical mining data whilst working in the open cut pits. Acubis was engaged to carry out mesh network diagnostics – a radio frequency RF propagation survey – to assess the loss of wireless connectivity in some parts of the network.

Solution: To identify the factors causing performance issues of the wireless mesh network, Acubis conducted a radio frequency (RF) propagation survey.

The RF survey analysis included:

  • location and placement of antennas
  • interference on channels
  • missing static routes
  • displacement and effectiveness of existing communication tower infrastructure

Analysis from the site survey revealed multiple causes contributing to dead spots and shadowing which resulted in loss of data and voice connectivity in specific site locations.

Recommendations:

Acubis recommended the following improvements:

  • Installation of new masts and radios to increase the mesh networks RF footprint across the mine site.
  • Remounting of omnidirectional radio antennas to ensure 360° RF receive/transmit visibility.
  • Procedural recommendations to eliminate IP conflicts and ensure critical infrastructure is not relocated without considering impact on other parts of the network.

Acubis also recommended further regular RF surveys to ensure optimal placement of Acubis Repeater Trailers and to ensure communications towers were positioned to maintain the strength and integrity of the network.
