Our Veteran Employment Commitment

Valued members of our team

Emergent Group is committed to employing veterans and creating an environment where they can perform at their best and become valued members of our team. We encourage veterans to apply for jobs, and invite them to disclose military service.

Our candidate selection and onboarding processes are veteran friendly to ensure we select the best candidate who has the ability to perform the role, and the potential to thrive within the culture of our organisation.  All Emergent Group employees are supported throughout the onboarding process. As a mid-sized organisation with three individual companies, we customise the communication, mentoring, networking and training to ensure new veteran employees receive the support they need.

All Emergent Group employees participate in regular capability development reviews to ensure they are receiving the support they require to successfully undertake their roles. We ensure all employees have the opportunity to undergo further training to develop their skills and achieve better outcomes for themselves and the business.

A supportive culture

We cultivate a collaborative and supportive culture across all three Emergent Group companies. All employees enjoy benefits including vouchers to pay for wellbeing activities, flexible work options and free access to professional counselling services if needed.

Access to a 24/7 confidential Employee Assistance Program is in place to support employees’ social and psychological wellbeing in the workplace and personal lives. This service is available for all employees and their immediate families who have personal and/or work-related issues that may impact their wellbeing, work performance, safety, individual and workplace morale and psychological health.

Veteran profile – Jim Dooner, Field Technician

Jim has had a 25-year career as a technical officer with the Australian Defence Force. During this time, Jim spent 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy as a Naval Marine Technician, specialising in electrical and propulsion systems, and gaining an intimate understanding of associated ship refits/upgrades,  maintenance and training.
After leaving the Navy, Jim spent five years as Progress Coordinator on the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG) Upgrade and Refit Project working for the Defence Materiel Organisation.

Jim joined the Emergent Group company Advitech in 2008 as an Engineering Officer in our Projects Team. He performed a number of jobs for the defence, environment, and sustainable technology industries. It was during this time that he established and coordinated a formal preventative maintenance program for the SentineX environmental monitoring system. This was instrumental in his appointment to another Emergent Group company, Novecom, where he has been a field technician for the last 14 years, working four days a week.

Veteran profile – Holly Pluss, Communications technician

Holly Pluss, a veteran of the Australian army, was employed by Acubis as an RF communications technician in 2022.

Holly has since moved on to work for a mining company but has left a legacy of great service with the mining clients of Acubis.

In this video, Holly talks about how she was able to successfully apply skills and work practices acquired with the ADF to her role with Acubis.

Observing days of significance

Lachlan McQualterAt Emergent Group we acknowledge that to those who have served in the armed forces or have loved ones who have, there are important days of observance on the annual calendar. We encourage all employees to reflect on such occasions and offer our veterans the opportunity to share their perspectives with their colleagues.

Lachlan McQualter, a Computer Scientist intern with Advitech, who is also a veteran, reflects on what Remembrance Day means to him.

“November 11th is a day which reminds current and ex service members of why they chose to join the Australian Defence Force in the first place. It is a day of mourning and a day of reflection, as it should be. But it can also be a proud day and a day where that same feeling of pride swells up in your chest as the day you first enlisted or appointed. We are reminded of the bravery, courage and selfless sacrifice exhibited by those who came and served before us.

On this day, regardless of length or type of service, I know that all current and ex serving ADF members feel that same reverent sense of fulfilment, having been able to stand in the boots of those individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice. Not only because they chose to serve their country, but because they all shared the common bond which drives the Australian Defence Force, mateship.”
